Common A/C Mishaps that Can Lead to Water Damage Claim

One thing that many people do not realize is that maintaining an air conditioning unit is a lot of work. The good news is that with regular upkeep and good overall maintenance, you can save yourself a lot of future headaches. The biggest mishap that can lead to water damage can be prevented much easier than you might think. Air conditioning mishaps can lead to water damage, and water damage can lead to mold and mildew proliferating. Here’s the kicker, homeowner’s insurance will not cover mold and mildew damage without a claim for water damage. So if you end up in a situation with mold and mildew from an air conditioning mishap, you need to find the leak and put an end to it.

The most common mishap that leads to water damage is simply one clogged pipe. The condensate drain is oftentimes overlooked far more than it should be. One of the ways that an air conditioner works is by pulling moisture from the air. The water that comes from the air needs to go somewhere, and that is where the condensate drain pipe comes in. These pipes typically lead to the outside and drain there. If this pipe gets clogged, the water can back up and cause water damage throughout your home, which is not something you want. Algae loves to call these little pipes home, and when that happens you have a large problem on your hands. The thing is, preventing this clog is easier than one, two, and three.

Everybody has their special remedy for drain clogs. Some people recommend pouring bleach into the condensate drain pipe, whereas others recommend pouring white vinegar into it. What you pour into the pipe isn’t as important as when you do it. Experts recommend that you pour an algae killer into the pipe once every few months. That’s it. Preventing a clog and water damage is as simple as pouring some vinegar into a pipe. Who knew?

Before you can have mold, you had to have water damage. Water damage to the ceiling, A/C Closet, and surrounding areas are the most common places to see mold and/or mildew beginning to thrive.
