Summer’s here! Get Your South Florida Home Insulated

When you’re from the north, you insulate your house to keep the cold out during the winter. But when you’re from the south it is the exact opposite, you get your South Florida home insulated to keep the cold in during the summer. Having a home that is poorly insulated can lead to sky high summer air conditioning bills, and who wants to deal with that? Investing in your home’s insulation could potentially save you a ton of money. Insulation is oftentimes overlooked as a way to save money when in fact it is one of the most efficient ways to spend money.

Insulation basically acts as a big blanket around your home. It holds on to heat, and that is exactly what you want it to do. The efficiency of resistance of the insulation is measured with the “R” value. If you have insulation that has an R-value of 12, and then you add insulation to it that has an R-value of 14, those two pieces together have an R-value of 26. The greater the R-value, the greater the insulation’s effectiveness. When determining what insulation you want to insulate your home with, it is important to figure out what R-value your home needs, and what material is best for your home.

There are four main types of insulation, fiberglass, spray foam, cellulose, and mineral wool. Fiberglass is the most common, inexpensive, and efficient. It is non-flammable and resistant to moisture damage, which makes it appealing to many homeowners. Spray foam is exactly what you think it is. It is a foam that is sprayed wherever you want it to go, and wherever it needs to go. It is best for enclosed existing walls, open new wall cavities, and unfinished attic floors. Cellulose id an environmentally friendly option that is best for finished areas, abnormally shaped areas, and working around obstructions. Mineral wool is similar to fiberglass, without the irritating factor, but is usually more expensive and harder to find. One major perk is that it can withstand much higher temperatures than other forms of insulation.

Insulating your home can save you a good amount of money during the summer. Find out what type is right for your home and invest before it gets too hot.
