Hurricane Safety for You and Your Florida Home

Hurricane season in South Florida can sometimes be a whirlwind. While there are some seasons where the east coast doesn’t see a single storm, there are others where the coast is constantly battered by the high winds and torrential rain. In the case of the latter, it is important that you have a plan for not only you and your family, but also for your home and all of your belongings. In times of emergency people often are only concerned with getting themselves to safety, as they should be, and this can lead to their homes suffering. When hurricane season comes around make sure you have a plan so that both you and your home and not just survive, but thrive. You should be familiar with a plan and hurricane safety.

Clearly the most important thing to worry about when a hurricane is headed your way is you and your family. Everything else can be replaced. Having a disaster plan is always a good idea, even if the storm takes a last minute hard right and misses you completely. Nobody ever complains about being too prepared when it comes to safety. It is smart to invest in some kind of radio device, whether battery powered or hand cranked, that you can use in the event of a power outage. Oftentimes government officials use the radio to communicate what is going on, and this is one of those crucial times to be in the know. Also, it is a good idea to have an out of town contact that your family can reach in the event that anyone gets separated. If you are in a situation where you don’t have a phone and you can’t be reached, having that outside contact is an invaluable resource. If everyone lets them know that they are healthy and alive, it can ease a lot of stress.

When it comes to your home, the basics still apply. It is always important to board up windows and bring any outdoor furniture inside. Hurricanes can have some pretty high wind speeds, and leaving your furniture outside could lead to it becoming dangerous. Make sure you have all of the necessary insurance, because If you do not and your home gets damaged it adds up very quickly. Call your public adjuster before the storm hits to ensure you have taken all the necessary precautions. Read our list of questions to ask your public adjuster during hurricane season before calling.
